Mostly found on this trip to Dollar Tree were many variations of the plastic "to go" cups. I chose the large cups on the bottom to make teacher gifts - I like the stretchy straws in them. I'm planning on personalizing them with layered vinyl (future post will have details). Then I will put their gift cards inside.
These cups below would be great for smaller kids since they've got the lanyard string.
Plastic bowls would be fun also to vinyl for pool parties or you could vinyl the bowl and make it into the base of a gift basket.
These plastic boxes on the left could be used for lunchbox/food storage or school supplies and would also be super cute with vinyl on them. The heavy glass beer mugs on the right look amazing when you use glass etching on them! The glasses below could be either vinyled or etched for a wedding party, gift or just your own home use.
More variations below on the plastic "to go" cups in different sizes and configurations.
I love these sports themed cups for a birthday party, end of season sports party or for a coach!
Here are some plastic coffee mugs also that could be decorated!
More glass to etch and some very inexpensive grosgrain and satin ribbon in various colors (on the right). Mirrors and frames on the left.
Don't forget that Dollar Tree is an excellent place to get styrofoam and floral foam - WAY cheaper than Joanns and Michaels.
Mini clipboards are fun to decorate with Mod Podge and paper - would be a fun craft for Girl Scouts or a slumber party.
Decorating the composition books is another fun craft using patterned paper and Mod Podge. Finally, on the right, there's plenty of glue sticks, glitter, glitter glue and craft/popsicle sticks for other crafty fun!
I hope you found some good ideas from this post! There are plenty of fun, inexpensive craft finds at Dollar Tree.
Do you shop at Dollar Tree? Does this post inspire a project from any of these items?
For those of you wondering what I meant about decorating the cups with vinyl, see the photo below. I made those using Cricut vinyl. I have had them for 2 years, washed them in the dishwasher (cause who has time for hand washing) and they look just the same. So the vinyl really does hold up.

Thanks for the great reminder about using Dollar Tree for inexpensive crafting. At the Dollar Tree, I recently purchased a class set of decorate your own travel mug for my 25 students. They decorated these mugs and inserted a poem in them to give to give to their moms for Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I need to head to the nearest Dollar Tree ASAP!! Great ideas. Since my son is starting kindergarten this year, I may have to pick up some of the composition books, clipboards and the little plastic boxes for school supplies and decorate them. It never occurred to me to even try that!! Thanks for all the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Such great ideas! How DO you think of all these things? Do you have tutorials for the cups??
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
What a great crafting inspiration, HOWEVER I use $tree all the time for great storage stuff and crafting items. The stickers and embellishments are great. The locker pockets fit great on metal doors and hold ALL of your handmade cards perfectly! Also they are great to store your cuts to keep them in order. I can't imagine a crafter that does not know DOllar ($)Tree. Thanks again for the great post.
ReplyDeleteJoy, you are AMAZING!! I had seen many of these items already at my local "Dollar General" and didn't even think to do the great ideas you gave! I've never done vinyl or etching, but I watched your video for Christmas gifts for your son's teachers! I'm definitely going to try it! THANK YOU for sharing your brilliant ideas and time with all of us! God Bless!!

ReplyDeleteWow you have more fun things at your dollar store then we have here. I purchased some of the plastic to go cups with straw at the end of the year and I paid $3 for each and I thought I got a great deal, but not as good as you got :) I have done both glass etching and vinyl projects on different items, my daughter is really good at this. Thanks for this wonderful giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWe have a smaller Dollar Tree in my town and it is fun to go into and see what I can find....If I'm really desparate, I go to the next town where there is a much bigger one! I have used vinyl on my F-150 pick-up...My daughter graduated from HS in 2010 as we used vinyl to decorate it up with bulldog paw prints (Paper Pups) along the sides and her School Name and colors for their Homecoming Rally and Parade...The pawprints are still there through the past seasons, car washes, heat and cold without lifting or peeling (we took the "school" stuff off). I get so many comments about my paws and it is really easy to find my "white pick-up" in the parking lot amongst all the other white pick-ups....I love my cricut and vinyl! Thanks for a chance to win some great goodies!
ReplyDeleteTanya T.
I have used vinyl before but never tried etching. I think the post was great. Brings a different perspective for when I go into the Dollar Tree.

I go to the dollar store regularly and I wish mine looked like yours! I am a Girl Scout leader so it is a must to find affordable crafts and activities. I have yet to try the vinyl on my Cricut. I love your projects! Thanks for the inspiration:)
ReplyDeleteThose are great ideas for inexpensive and fun items! I've never done vinyl work before...my cricut is the smallest/earliest version and I'm pretty sure it doesn't cut vinyl? But your examples of cups are great and very creative! Also, I don't have an AC Moore in my part of the country....but seeing those coupons sure makes me wish I did! :-) (I already subscribe to your blog)
ReplyDeleteLove the Dollar store for fun craft ideas. with 6 kids and 5 grandkids we have done many crafts over the years and always end up at the Dollar store for supplies. Love the cups!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the Dollar Tree info! I have one in a nearby town that I like to shop at. I'll be looking at it differently now. I've tried the vinyl, but not the etching. I'm glad to hear the vinyl holds up in the dishwasher. I'll do more vinyl projects now!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I love the stamp sets. Thanks for sharing.
i have very little money for craft supplies; so, I haunt the dollar tree any time I am in need of anything! thekimmiefiles at gmail dot com
ReplyDeleteI wondered if you'd be able to wash in dishwasher. how do you keep your straws clean? i'm kinda funny about 'reusing' straws. what do you clean the inside with?
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! Love the dollar stores!
ReplyDeleteI haven't shopped at a Dollar Tree, but I have been to dollar stores. Sometimes you have to dig, but there's always some gems in there!
ReplyDeleteI love the Dollar Tree finds - I go there all the time and I really forget yest forget that there are so many things to craft with on a daily basis. We have several in my neighborhood - they are like the 7-11 one on every block (lol) I will have the chance to create some nice things for my daughter to give to her classmates this year for the summer. I also wanted to let some know that I also live near AC Moore and it seems they are getting rid of their section of Spellbinders and Cricut Cartridges - not sure if they are making room for new ones - but the Spellbinder dies are marked down to as low as $10 and the cartridges are as low as $14 - some are the newer cricut lites - Stock up.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE dollar tree! I recently did my own dollar tree craft. :D I haven't tried glass etching but I am going to soon! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeletei love the dollar tree. it is amazing...i have done glass etching with my cricut...very easy very elegant

Yes, I loved your Dollar Tree crafting suggestions! And I love shopping at the Dollar Tree. I have etched wine glasses and beer steins that I have bought from there, and their plastic trays (that look like cut glass) are wonderful on which to give holiday baking.
ReplyDeleteDollar Tree is the best place for inexpensive crafts! I used some of the slanted glass jars and put vinyl on them for forks, spoons and knives for our workroom at school. Dollar Tree is great!

I loved all the ideas to use vinyl. I made teacher cups with the Dollar store iced cups for end of the year gifts filled with crystal light packets and candy. I thought the wine glasses would be cute with vinyl mustaches. Do you know of any cricut cartridges that have a mustache?
ReplyDeleteI love these ideas and I often shop at the Dollar Tree for craft items.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to something that I made using a Dollar Tree tray. http://trailsofpaper.blogspot.com/2013/05/magnet-board.html
Sadly, I live in Moore, Oklahoma where the tornado redesigned our town. I have heard that the Dollar Tree is still there, but I don't know if it is open.
It has been a rough week for the people of Moore.

ReplyDeleteI love getting crafting supplies on the cheap at the dollar store. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I sure would love the stamps from this weeks give away. I have dreamed of owning some of Emma's stamps for a long long time. Thanks for all you do.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy going to Dollar Tree once a month or so and checking out their latest treasures. I got a travel mug and added my initials and a phrase using vinyl. It's held up well for the past 3 years of dishwasher washing and travel abuse!
ReplyDeleteI also etched a couple bowls with my name to use for potluck.
Love the stamp sets for give-a-way!

ReplyDeleteI also love chicken & broccoli salads. But in the summer when it's hot I sometimes just make a fruit salad. All different types of fruit mixed together & chilled is very refreshing on a hot day especially after working in the yard & you're too tired to cook.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved how you have created your website, it's simple, neat, simple to navigate and extremely easy on the eyes. Is it possible to let me know which theme or designer did you use.
