How to Make A Quick Layout with a Free Video Lesson!

After signing up for the Layout A Day class, launching in May (see THIS POST for more details and an early bird special), I started to panic about how I could make so many layouts in one month.  And show them on this blog. YIKES!
Then, I got an email from Debbie Hodge from Get It Scrapped.  Many of you got her FREE From Photos to Scrapbook Page in 5 Easy Steps class (if not, get it HERE) so you may remember her high quality teaching.

She is rolling out a series of low-cost classes called Scrapbook Coach and the first one is "On A Shelf".   Here's a bit about that Scrapbook Coach:
Scrapbook Coach is a series of self-paced video classes that teach you to start with a  common page foundation and then shake it up to make great looking scrapbook pages efficiently. In every class you scrapbook alongside Debbie Hodge as she guides you in photo crops, paper choices, title treatments and embellishing.
There is a free video tutorial that gives you an idea what the class will be like so I decided to watch it and make the layout in it.

So, I created this layout:
Watching the video and following her instructions made creating the layout so much easier.  What was nice was that she explained why she put things where she did and what design principles she referenced.

I worried about lining things up evenly so I used a large 2" x 18" clear quilting ruler and mat to try to get those things perfect.

By using painter's tape and sticking down my layout, I was able to get pretty close.  Of course, I thought of that idea towards the end of the project...
No project is complete without some Cricut cuts!  I used the new Creative Memories Tiny Treasures cartridge for the lettering (cut at 1").  Even though this is a baby cartridge, the fonts are excellent and there are many shapes that can be used in a variety of ways.  You can see all the images on the cartridge and purchase it HERE, from my good blogger friend Diane of Capadia Designs.
The label was cut at 1-1/2" and is from the Cricut Sophisticated cartridge by Teresa Collins. Love that cartridge.  And finally, the pennants were from the Pretty Pennants Cricut cartridge and were cut at 2-1/2".

All in all, it took me about an hour to make this layout.  Much of that time was spent finding the right paper.  I have 11,000 sheets of paper (ok, not really that many...but a lot) and selecting paper is always tricky.  For me, this is a speedy quick layout.

  4. Ok, one of my first jobs tomorrow is to collect three photos of the same event. I'm going to do this three page on a shelf page. I haven't got any of the cartridges you used but I'm sure I can find some pennants on another one. Thanks to both you and Debbie for the inspiration :-)
