I'm back today with another iron-on vinyl project. I love, love, love to read and thought a book bag would be a fun project to make.
I got the black canvas bag at Hobby Lobby (these are often 50% off ), however at $2.99, it's a bargain no matter what. See below:
And then I thought this was a funny saying, based off a popular rap song by Sir Mix A Lot ("Baby Got Back"). Not that I'm a big rap listener at all, but this song has been played all over so it's hard to miss.
I used my Gypsy to make a file and weld the letters together and flip them. I actually didn't need to do that since I learned that the iron-on vinyl stays attached to its plastic backing all throughout the process, until you are done ironing, so there's no need to worry about letter shifting. I used the Creative Memories Traveler Cartridge - I just love this font! File will be available below.
I got my iron-on vinyl from Expressions Vinyl - they have a bunch of colors and various sizes for the Cricut (6" x 12", 12" x 12", 12" x 24", 12" x 5 yds, 12" x 10 yds) . They have iron-on vinyl (looks matter - which I've used and like) and flocked vinyl (love the dimension on this kind). It is $6.49 for 12" x 24" and there are frequent coupons. Be sure and sign up for their email newsletter.
I cut this all out using the following setting of blade at 4, pressure and speed at 3. I was asked in the comments the other day why I had to flip the wording. When you cut this out, the plastic backing goes against the mat, so that the vinyl is facing upward. Then, when you go to iron, the plastic backing is facing up and is what you iron on. So, you have to flip whatever you are working on.
Finally, I thought I would add a funny photo of my cat, who laid her big self on my bag before I started the project. I had to force her off it to start the ironing.
The Gypsy file can be downloaded HERE!

ReplyDeleteTOO funny! I love the bag, and the pic of your cat lying on it reminds me of mine--she likes to lie down on the newspaper when I am trying to read it.

ReplyDeleteThat's CUTE! My kids would get a big kick out of the "pun"!
ReplyDeleteNice looking bag.
ReplyDeleteWhat difference is there between the Cricut Craft Room and the Gypsy? I tried using the CR love that I can see a larger screen but was stumped as to how to navigate the site.

Thats a great bag!!! I'm a huge reader too, but along with my hoarding of scrap supplies, I hoard books. So after 10 yrs of hoarding all my reads, I have an ereader now. 3500 books all in one gadget. But the bag is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteJoy, Thanks for clarifying why you have to flip the image. Makes sense now. Is the iron on vinyl easier than using regular vinyl and ironing on the adhesive? Love, love, love the cat pic. They always get on exactly what we using, whether it newspaper, books, or a computer keyboard!
ReplyDeleteSo funny! I love it!!
ReplyDeleteOMG, that is the best laugh I have had today!! Hilarious!!
