Cricut Settings Table
One thing that is absolutely critical to making the Cricut cut properly is to have the pressure, speed and depth of blade correct for the type of paper you are using. This, by far, is what makes or breaks your Cricut experience. No one wants to ruin expensive paper by accidently having the wrong settings in place and then shredding their paper! It's certainly happened to me enough times, especially when switching amongst different types of paper like going from heavy cardstock to thin patterned paper.
So as not to forget to check the settings each time before I cut, I created the table shown above, which visually reminds me to check the settings and also tells me what settings are appropriate. These are some good guidelines to follow, but may need some tweaking as the machines can be a little different from one another.
Another important tip to remember is to make sure the blade housing number is SQUARE ON facing you. I had mine slightly off center and none of my cuts looked good! I was ready to throw the Cricut out the window until a friend looked at it and immediately diagnosed that as the problem. Thank goodness for Tammy!
A good guideline to follow also has to do with how intricate the cut is that you are trying to make. The more detailed the cut, the SLOWER the speed. And vice versa. Keep that in mind when setting your machine.
Finally, I love to test my cuts on cardstock from Walmart. You can get a pack of 150 sheets of white cardstock (8.5 x 11) at Walmart for less than $6 and it has saved me from numerous mistakes. Look in the office suppy area for this. Another idea is to set your blade and pressure at 1 and watch how the cut moves across the page. It won't cut the page but will give you an idea of the size of the cut.

Thank you for posting this. I am also a fan of the WM cardstock. I use it a lot for journaling spots and to stamp my sentiment on when making cards. It's very smooth!
ReplyDeleteYou're a Cricangel! ;)

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I was becoming so frustrated with my cricut as it was just ripping my paper during cuts. I Googled 'cricut settings' and found your blog. I downloaded the table and tried it. And you know what...IT WORKED!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping others.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! It's great that it fits right on the Expression! Cool! Thanks for making it for us!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the table. This is a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of it :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting the info you use on your table. This will make things so much easier for me and my friends.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the Expression, but the Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter Machine. Do the settings you speak of here apply to all Cricuts?
ReplyDeleteYes, this table works for all the Cricut machines - Personal, Create and Expression!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, thank you SO much!
ReplyDeleteYour chart has changed my life! I'm sharing your chart with all my Cricut friends.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this table. I have such a hard time figuring out what to use when...this will really help.
ReplyDeleteThank so much Joy!
ReplyDeleteYour tips are great. I have been having all those problems. What paper do you use for envelopes? I love the envelopes in Wild Card but I am having trouble with what to use. Card stock is too thick.
Your videos are so helpful. I am going to try the thank you card you made with Storybook right now!
Thanks again,
Linda

I cut this out when I got my expression and every time I cut I refer to this chart. It is a life save and a must have for everyone that owns a cricut. THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this cutting chart Joy!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Terry
Thank you... I saw this on Christmas with the Cricut regarding your 7 tips, and you're right about the new mats and thin patterned paper! I wish I had known this before. Oh well, thank you for the chart, this will help alot!
ReplyDeleteKathy
Thank you sooo much. I have ruined so many pieces of paper, and it is so frustrating having to recut something, when I have so little time to cut things to begin with.
ReplyDeleteThankyou so much Joy
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the table! Can't wait to give it a try. LOL>..i checked my housing...and yep....it wasn't square either!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's so annoying when your cuts don't pan out. This will be great!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the Cricut table!!! I am new to the Cricut machine even though I have had it a year. I think I have been intimidated by it. I decided that I want to use my machine and not let it sit any longer. I know if I can just figure it out that I will love it and use it all the time. I only had the Don Juan cartridge and it's boring. I got on e-bay and bought 3 new carts and hope that will help me get motivated. I love your blog and all the info you share with all of us. I am sure you hear it all the time but thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the settings...it is a big big help.
ReplyDeleteI am a new Cricuteer and was wondering what thickness chipboard you use? I have looked around on other blogs and there is a lot of varying opinion...I'm just too scared to put anything in my machine that might ruin it! Thanks for the settings table, it will definitely help all of us newbies!!
ReplyDeleteI cannot seem to download the settings chart - could you please email it to me: llsacorn@aol.com. Love your site - I just got my Expression and I love it. Also, can you tell me the top five - or ten - cartridges that you think a beginner needs? I don't do scrapbooking, but I was wondering if there are ones that you use for cards and other items. Thanks
ReplyDeleteLauren
Hey! I got it finally! No need to send it!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chart! I have only cut one thing on my new machine I got for Xmas. I did have some troubles but I think this may be the answer. Thanks again, Dena
ReplyDeleteI cannot get the chart to open. Could you email it to me at albrst@yahoo.com. I am having so much trouble with my new expressions snagging and tearing paper.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of your help. I have had my Cricut for over a year and used it very little. Now I am getting excited. I have one question. On the settings sheet it is in numbers but my cricut has low, med ect. How do I judge? Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your table. I received my expression for Christmas and had some difficulty with some cuts, so I was saving scraps of different papers to do the same. You saved me from that clutter pile and headaches. Thanks a bunch!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Thank you, Thank you for creating this table, You saved me from chucking my cricut out the window. I posted your page as a link on my blog here is the link.

ReplyDeletecopy. Is emailing an option? Address is kchristenson44@gmail.com
Thank you so much,

Thank you so much for the free cutting table joy:) I was wondering would this table work the same for a deepcut cutting blade and housing. I only have the deepcut houseing & blade because when I bought my expressions the houseing and blade were missing. Please email your response whenever you have a chance:) Thank U

Thank you for sharing your info. and what an informative site.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I discovered your blog today and I've already watched a few of you videos. They're great, I can't wait to try some of the new things I saw in your videos. I have a question about the cutting guide. I've downloaded the one you have on your blog already. Do you have one for the deep cut blade? If so I'd love to see your suggestions for the cutting guide for that blade.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog ... oh I wish I'd found it 6 months ago when I first started.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is, I had got my vinyl cutting down and it was perfect, then I cut some card and when I went back to the previous settings it didn't cut so good :-(.
Have you tried cutting the chipboard? What width have you used? I'd be really interested in hearing more.
Many thanks for your tips.
Jane
Thanks for sharing your cutting table! I'm guessing it will make my cutting experience that much more enjoyable!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the info, always learning new stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this valuable tip!
ReplyDeleteThankyou for the chart info. I can mount it to my E and really rock! I have been afraid to cut chipboard and vellum because of poor results in the past. Now, I get it! MaMaK at drdianek@att.net
ReplyDeleteYou are a sanity saver. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this. I just got a regular Cricut and I am having fun learning how to use it. I love your site. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us. :)
ReplyDeletethanks so much for the chart. This takes away the guesswork and wasted paper! I love your videos. Im so happy I found you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the chart...I was always guessing...wrong! I just used it and it worked beautifully and it cut the paper wonderfully! Thanks again! :o)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing the table. I have been a user of the Cricut for some time but still have learning to do.
ReplyDeletetfs your cricut tips...
ReplyDeleteHi there, I am waiting for my Cricut personal cutter to arrive, and have downloaded your chart, I'm sure it will save me a lot of tears and tantrums! many thanks. I can't wait to get started.
ReplyDeleteSusie
Thanks for the help. As a Newbie, I have shredded a lot of paper and believe your advice will help me in the future.
ReplyDeleteThank you SOOOO much for this guide. I was tearing up paper left and right. It was awful. I was about to throw my Cricut right out the window! I'm glad I didn't!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHere is my tip- actually my daughter thought of it. Her friend works at Lowe's and they were throwing away the wallpaper sample books. My daughter thought they would be great for card making. First I thought it was silly. However, I tried it in the cricut and the paper cuts great. The ugly pattern ones I use as a template so I don't ruin my good paper. This has been a money saver. I now have tons of junk paper to practice on first. Kgrin
ReplyDeleteJOY! HOORAY! Looks like you made it to your 1 million mark. Like others have said..."i'm not surprised" your blog is fantastic and only because you are FANTASTIC!
ReplyDeleteWow, I million....that was about 3,000 less only a week ago. Way to go.
ReplyDeleteQ for you - and thanks for the blade chart - do you always use the deep blade for everything and just adjust your setting...or do you switch blades to cut the thinner paper and the card stock?
Is this the place to enter your giveaway? I'm a newbie, so you can decide for me, but carts I'm lacking.

This really works--I put a link on my blog to this! Thanks for you blog--great cards! Love them--Linda
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch, Joy !!!
ReplyDeleteI discovered your website on youtube. Your website is by far the best I have seen. Thanks 2 for the cutting guide; a great idea. No doubt #1. Toodles 4 now.
Hello. I have the same question as someone above. I just got my Cricut and mine also has settings such as low and med, not numbers. So how do I follow the settings sheet? Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks very much. Now no more mistakes when cutting!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chart, but is there a way you can email it to me? I cannot see as well as I used to, and I cannot make out the headings or the numbers on the chart.
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance and I really apreciate your sharing this with everyone.
Thanks again and have a great upcoming weekend.....Cricuit away!!!
Thank you so much for this guide - I have been looking for something like this!! Thanks again!!! :) Sue
ReplyDeleteI was just jumping over from Everyday Cricut and saw your cutting guide. I look at your blog almost everyday and somehow missed it. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is my biggest headache. I understand I will maybe have to tweak it for my machine but it gives me a good starting place. Again thank you so much!!!!!!! Made my day!
ReplyDeleteThank you sooo much for this!!! Very helpful.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the information on cutting. My biggest complaint is that I can't figure what size the cut will be. I'm thrilled to learn about putting pressure and blade depth at 1 to determine this! WooHoo!
ReplyDeleteJane Nied

Thank YOU so much for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI think your ideas are wonderful. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteThis chart really helps a lot. I printed 2 copies so I can put one up for my machine and the other one for my friend. Thanks for the tips. Today I bought at Walmart the card stock. Just like you I also use it. A tip from me , if you cut intricate item off the cricut software, it best to cut it larger than small. Small intricate cuts get snagged on the blade.
ReplyDeleteI am having problems downloading the table. Could you please email it to me at jennifferlynn@hotmail.com.
ReplyDeleteThank you in advance for your help. I am new to the Cricut and your site is so very helpful!
thank you, thank you, thank you. This is great information and much needed.
ReplyDeletehi this is so good but i am a little confused, because the cricut creative dont have numbers
ReplyDeleteso i dont know what num is my creative
they have this
min-low-med-high-max some body can help me , sometime im filling like
dummy :0 :)
thanks

ReplyDeleteYour chart? A life saver! I worked for hours trying to cut out Belle's yellow dress....very detailed. I changed blades, mats, went through several pieces of cardstock... was ready to go by a new Cricut...I was sure it was broke! I decided Belle would just have to go to the Ball NAKED! She was not said, "Don't worry Gram...I will color the dress on her!" (and she did...very cute!) But wait, I logged into your site..and there it was A CHART...exactly what i needed...like MAGIC...Belle has a dress and we are all happy! Thank you sooo much for your help...You are a life saver...at least for poor Belle!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! and thank you for your kindness in teaching and helping others with the Cricut!
ReplyDeletethis is wonderful thank you, thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat!! Thank you so much for helping me learn about the cricut keyboard.
ReplyDeleteI hope it is similar to the Cuttlebug Embossing Machine. They are pretty similar. Do you have any posts related to this machine?
Thanks so much! I just got the cricut and was so frustrated with the paper not cutting every time. Your chart helped so much!
ReplyDeleteI've just got my Cricut and was wondering what I made be doing wrong. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJennie
Need help with cutting settings for pressure etc. on my Cricut Expressions.
ReplyDeleteMy machine does not have numbers as your chart shows but
Med, High, Max etc.
Seems almost everything I try to cut is ripping.
Ilona
This is perfect, thank you so much!! Why didn't I think of this, lol!!
ReplyDeleteAll the wonderful instructions and tips are just great for me as a beginner.
ReplyDeletethank you so much for your table. It was exactly what I was looking fror. For those people having trouble converting numbers to high, med etc mine has the numbers on the dial and tells you the setting (like high) on the LCD screen. Also maybe rotate the dial and see how many positions each dial has and convert the numbers to the words. Just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for your great table. my cricut was tearing my paper too and I just couldn't seem to get the settings right!
Oh Joy, I have your site on my facebook and I love it. I can't thank you enough for the table for cutting for the cricut. I have the cricut expression and many times have been afraid to ruin my cardstock. Now I will have more confidence thanks to you Joy. Thank you again!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cricut cutting guide. I know I'll get some good use out of it.
ReplyDeleteI tried to download the cutting chart but cannot get it to open. Would you email it to me? cstephenson@q.com
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Cyndi
- I too tried to download the cutting chart but cannot get it. Has it been removed or is there just a hiccup? Hope it's just the hiccup.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the table. It really helped alot!!!
ReplyDeleteJoy, I have an Apple now and I am still getting used to it. I am having trouble downloading the chart for the settings. Could you possibly email it to me at jillybeank@gmail.com? I would so appreciate it!

Thank you so much for the Cricut Settings Table; I typed one up for myself just now. I have discovered the different setting do make such a huge difference. Your blog continues to inspire me.
ReplyDeleteI was searching for this table and found it in your blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...
Thank you for all of the great info. My cricut is on its way and I'm looking for all of the tips I can get!
ReplyDeleteI cannot get this to download. Could you email the settings table to me? lbrown7@neo.rr.com
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
Nice chart, but you crafty folks need to discover Google docs for sharing files. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI also am having trouble downloading the chart...it says that the link is no longer available. If it wouldn't be to much trouble can you email the chart to me? srwaterman1@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteThanks much and thanks for helping us new people out!
I have never bought Walmart cardstock, now I will try some. I have purchased my cheap cardstock at Big Lots. It is Bazzil for $3.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, very helpful. This good to know, that way you will not waste good paper like you said
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness... I have just bought my first Cricut expression, after saying for a few years that I would not do so. I'm hooked after just a few hours. And there is so much to learn!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm buying my first Cricut today...I'm so excited!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. It has been invaluable to me. Love your work.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the table. I think most of my problem is I forget to change the settings. I seem to waste a lot of thin paper due to not changing the settings. Thanks so much for sharing your work.
ReplyDeleteSorry... anonymous is me, Carol, jones61405@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I honestly had no idea the direction of the blade made a difference. I thought they said to face it at you so it would be easier to see when setting blade depth. Now I know!hummmm.
ReplyDeletehi, I love all the new cartridges, but I especially love the Close to My Heart Art Philosophy Cartridge: there are beautiful tags and intricate stamps, the three dimensional flowers and bags. what's not to love.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you do. I can actually use my cricut because of you. thanks
Thank you so much for posting this! However, I have a question...I cut vinyl all the time on my Cricut. I noticed that you have the blade setting at 6. Is this to cut all the way through the backing too? I usually have it set at 2, which only cuts through the vinyl, not the backing. I was just wondering how you did it. Thanks! Jenn
ReplyDeleteI just got my Expressions 2 machine today! Can't wait to try it out and this chart will really help. I love your website and will continue to explore it - can't wait to work on the Christmas cards. I will make some this year, maybe I can do them ALL next year. Thanks for your chart.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoy your site - learning lots and excited about my Cricut Expression!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the making sure the housing setting is right tip. I didn't know that. thanks for sharing. Edwina Brown
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this!! I knew about the settings, but couldn't remember what was what when it came time to cut. Also, I had never heard about the housing. A great tip. My mother, my mother in law and my sister in law all have a fairly new cricut and they all call me because theirs is tearing their paper and they are all so frustrated. I will send them your link. Thank you so much, once again for all the people you have helped. The chart is great!!!
ReplyDeleteGREAT TIPS, JUST BOOKMARK YOU.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have told you how much your site/blog helps me in my scrapbooking. Thank you again for being my go to girl for my scrapbooking questions!
ReplyDeleteHolly
I just bought a Cricut Expression as a Christmas gift to myself. This chart will be a tremendous help. The first thing I tried to cut--didn't cut at all! Guess there is a learning curve here and the chart will be a big help.
ReplyDeleteGreat information. Thanks. Here's another question you may have the answer to I hope. My cut never returns exactly to the same spot. For ex. if I cut a circle, the 2 end will be slightly 'off'. Any suggestions? Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you. That's so generous of you to share your chart. I read through all of the comments and found the same question I have, but never saw an answer. My Cricut goes by low/med/high, not a number system. Almost everything on the net (including your chart) refers to numbers. Do you have any idea how that translates or why I don't have numbers?
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
Tammy

ReplyDeletecan a cricut cut fabric ? if so ...... how ?
ReplyDeleteHi Heather, The Cricut can cut lightweight cotton fabric. You must first iron on some heat'n bond. I have a post about this showing how to cut fabric in the Cricut - see here: http://www.obsessedwithscrapbooking.com/2011/10/autumn-napkins-with-cricut-paper.html
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading the blog! Hugs, Joy
