[Video]How to Organize and Store Embossing Folders and Dies with Close to My Heart

I have a little embossing folder addiction. I just love them and with their low price point, they are so easy to collect.  They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Of course, I don't think I have a problem (isn't that what they all say?). Hee hee.

I was so excited when I realized that the Close to My Heart large organizer could hold large and small embossing folders and dies. It can also hold up to 40 stamp sets.

Before this, my embossing folders and dies were sitting out, in some disarray.  The problem was that the 5" x 7" embossing folders didn't fit in any containers I could find - they were too tall.  So, once I discovered that they would fit in this Close to My Heart large organizer, I was thrilled!
Of course, no container should go unadorned so I had to put some vinyl on it (see video below for more details).
Above you can see the folders and then my ring of tags.  Those tags are each embossed and numbered to match up to my folders.  That way I can quickly decide which folder I want to use. I can even hold it up to the project.
Then, one of my readers Dotty E., pointed out how helpful those Close to My Heart 6"x6" envelopes shown above would be to store your dies in.  What a great idea!  Then those envelopes fit perfectly in the organizer also!  WOO HOO!
Below are the products I used:
These are the Close to My Heart envelopes used to store the dies.

These Close to My Heart tabbed dividers can also be used to further organize your folders and dies.
I used the Close to My Heart Artiste Cricut Cartridge to make the "embossing folder" vinyl.

  1. I think I'm well on my way to matching your supply of folders. I do, however, have a ways to go yet!!!!

  2. I store my folders in a large box, divided by theme,....numbered and tagged....just like yours. (Only difference I see is by theme, great minds think alike!) I love the idea of CTMH box and the envelopes for the dies. I am using a different system for my dies, BUT already have many uses for those envies dancing in my head!.....like storing UM's. Thanks for this great tip and everything you do! hugs, Gerrie

  6. I have been trying to figure out how to store my stamps and embossing folders. What a great way to organize these items.

  7. I use a photo type books & organize the folders by subject. I have also added dividers so I can locate the folders more easily. I write on the spine what subjects are inside the book.

  8. What a great idea. Have been trying to figure out a way to store them. I have them in a photo box right now but not all sizes fit in that.

  10. I have some little crates from WM, and the file folders that Okie designed and shared the file for several years ago. That works for my A2 folders, not great for the larger ones I have now

  11. I have mine store in a plastic container in small file folders (like Swimmom) from Okie. I embossed the front of the folders & inked them to make the image easier to see. The name of the folder is on the file tab & sorted alphabetically. I do keep the Christmas ones filed at the back of the box. I am running our of room, so the bigger container may be the way to go.

  12. When I had fewer embossing folders I bought Hobby Lobby's pink and black embossing folder storage binders because they were pretty in my craft room. I soon realized they were not going to work for me. They only hold 20 of the A2 size, and do not hold the larger ones. I like your tags idea and will definitely copy that! TFS!!!

  13. Love your idea. I have mine stored in an embossing binder from AC Moore. It's bulky and doesnt work for the larger folders. This container is on my next CTMH order :0) Thanks Joy.

  14. Great Idea to use the swatch tags. Right now mine are in 2 binders that are especially made for them, it works quite well but if I keep buying more I'll have no more room! : )

  15. Great idea on storing folders! I have quite a few of them now and needed to find away to store them. Love yours!

  16. This is a fantastic idea!!! I just got one of these storage totes. They are so nice and quality made! I love it!!!

  17. I bought the 3 drawer stand and I put my wooden stamps in one drawer, my acrylic stamps in the other and my rollers and other misc items in the last drawer.... but I love your idea..... I will have to be changing my ways.

  18. Wow, you do have an ef addiction! LOL Lucky! I have about 10-12 and they are just sitting on a shelf. Love this storage system!

  19. Thanks for the info. I just purchased a binder for the folders.....some fit...others do not and it is hard to insert them and even harder to remove them!!!! So sorry I did not know this about the storage unit. Will be replacing that folder with the storage system from CTMH. Thanks again

  20. Mine are in a drawer and I hardly ever use them because it's such a mess! I would love this box to organize them!!

  21. I have quite a few embossing folders and keep them all in a box, which is a little larger than a shoe box. It works for me as they are on top of my workspace and it's handy to just flip through them and find the one I want. I love the idea of the envelopes for the dies, though! CTMH envelopes are the best!

  22. I LOVE embossing folders!!! I have several and store them in one of the 3-inch D ring binders (and now need another binder). It is very hard to find anything the 5x7 folders will fit in and also I find the Sizzix folders are about 1/4 inch larger than the other A2 folders so they won't fit into the folders made for the A2 embossing folders. I would love to have this box as it may be the perfect solution and I am going to snag your idea of the embossing samples, I would never have thought of that!!

  23. I also have a large collection of embossing folders that are stored upright in a basket so I can flip through to find what I want. Thanks for sharing your storage ideas!

  24. I have quite a few embossing folders, and I love using them. They really make a card look great. I have my smaller ones in an Ikea box; another box also holds my Cuttlebug dies, but I don't have too many of them. The larger ones are just lined up in the Ikea cube where the boxes are stored. Of course, I don't have as many as you do! LOL. This organizer looks terrific though. BethAnn M.

  25. I only have about 10 embossing folders at this time but I do have them stored in a binder with vinyl protective sleeves.

  26. I love embossing folders too! I got Anna Griffin's auto ship sets last year...awesome! I store them all (well most of them, now) standing upright in one of those photo boxes you get from Michaels (on sale, naturally)...the bigger ones in the back, medium in middle and smaller (A2) in front. I get such pleasure flipping through them when I want to emboss, and this way it reinforces, in my mind, the many beautiful, different designs...I do love the CTMH storage containres though. I may have to get one if I keep getting any more embossing folders!

  27. Great idea! I have a smaller plastic container that I have now outgrown.

  28. Great organizing ideas. My embossing folders are in a plastic shoe box without the lid.

  29. I think I have as many embossing folders as you do! (I was embarrassed to admit how many). :) Anyway, mine are stored in a binder with sheets with pockets on them (4 pockets for the smaller ones and 2 pockets for the 5x7 ones). I thought I liked this way to store them but it really isn't working too well. I have too many and sometimes the binder just does not stay closed. I might have to look into getting this large storage box so they are more accessible to me and easier to get out. Thanks for the great idea.

  30. Like you I have a lot of folders. I store them in a plastic shoe box. I like your idea of making embossed tags, then numbering them with the corresponding number on the folder. I think I'll try that.

  31. I have quite a few folders but not as many as you do. I keep them in a dvd holder that I bought at Target. The top is open so I can see what I have - and I set the box in my Ikea Expedit that is right behind my desk

  32. I have a number of embossing folder. I keep them in an adorned (of course) plastic shoebox. I like your idea of the numbered tags to identify the folders. Thank you for all of your great ideas. Love your reader's suggestion on the envelopes for the dies. Jill P., Manteca, CA

  34. I have lots and lots of embossing folders and I have them in a roll around storage unit and they are in the drawers according to type etc. I love your idea of the embossed tags on a ring and numbered. Your storage ideas are great.

  35. I just purchase 2 binders that will hold 40 each of the A2 size. The larger ones I have in a plastic organizer. I just need to make my tags and emboss them.

  36. I have tons of embossing folders. Mine are stored standing upright in wooden cd crates. They fit perfectly and can hold a lot in each one. I have them separated by holiday in one, Tim Holtz in another and the rest in the other two.

  37. I have only a few embossing folders that I store flat in a shoe box. You are just one organized lady! Thanks for all the tips. I know they will come in handy as I am working to reorganize my cricut cartridges, hundreds of stamps, paper supplies and envelopes. Just need time to use all these crafty things.

  38. Well I do have a few embossing folders...I think about 10 or so. I put them in a plastic storage box (shoebox size) along with some other craft items that I use for my Sizzix (what I use to emboss).
Good to know that this storage container is available, if needed! Yours looks so nice and neatly organized. :)

  39. I don't have an embossing folders. Do these require a special machine? I got my first Cricut (the Expression) about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it froze up while trying to update the firmware and Cricut support could not help me get it going again so I am patiently waiting for the replacement machine that they are sending me. Would love to win the Cricut cartridge. I think I am addicted to this already!

  40. I only have a few folders and save them with the embossing machine.

  41. I store my embossing folders in a plastic container from Staples. But I like your idea better! I will sure need another large CTMH storage container now

  42. I started with the small embossing folder storage binder but outgrew that last year when I got Anna Griffin's Cuttlebug with embossing folders on auto-ship. I found a plastic container - similar but smaller than yours - on clearance at Joann's and that has worked well. Except I have now outgrown that. Thanks for sharing this great organizing solution! And I love the tag idea. I was just thinking last week - how am I going to know what embossing folders I have without pulling out each one? You provided a solution to my problem! Thank You!!! And have a great weekend!

  43. Thank you so much for the great idea and yes, I do have some folders and was wondering what the best way is to store them.

  45. I love my CTMH storage boxes. I currently have 3 that I store my Cricut CTMH stamps(yes I have 2 1/2 full ). But this is a fantastic Idea to store our emb. folders. I too have a VERY large collection. We are wonderfully & creatively addicted LOL. I keep a notebook w/ a running alpha list of all my folders. They are stored in those blue cloth zippered binders from JoAnns. Mind are bursting at the seams. I always have to flip through them to find what I'm looking for. My most used ones are on my Clip It stand. So I love your system that corresponds to the numbers. I may seriously think about re-organizing. And I must buy some of the envelopes for my flat dies. that is also a fabulous idea. Thank you so much for the productive tips. Have a good weekend and a Happy Valentines Day next week.

  46. I have more embossing folders than Cricut cartridges and I have 100+ Cricut cartridges. I store them in plastic containers but yes some do not quite fit. I'll have to ck out the CTMH storage containers. My go to embossing folders are D'Vine Swirl & Swiss Dots. I keep those 2 handy, right next to my Sizzix BIGkick.

  47. I store my embossing folders in 2 old wooden catalogue drawers like the ones the library had.. They are in alphabetical order. I save the packaging and have examples of each in a notebook so its easy to see what I have.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I currently store my embossing folders in an Ikea see-thru box. The difference between my box and yours is that my folders all lay flat and I don't have dividers! It was an inexpensive solution ;-)
I really like your idea about having tags! What I do to keep the names straight, is as soon as I open the package I write the name right on the folder (I use a pink Sharpie) so I won't forget!

  49. I have mine stored as you have shown...my sister in law made a copy of the swatches for herself too so she can check them out from me...I belong to your addiction club.

  50. I have a small collection with swatch cards. I store them in a random box I found laying around but with the 5x7, its not really working well. I'll have to invest in this container once I unpack my craft room! Thanks for sharing!

  51. I Learn so much from your video! I did not know that about old vinyl. I needed some white vinyl for church & had a terrible time with it,I had to keep rubbing the letters down my dh said I need to get one of those little rubberwheels!:) Why is this doing this, now I know!!!! So Thank You(New vinyl next time)
I keep mine in the drawer of my desk, I only have 5 folders! Love the embossing tags /# cards, great idea. I need to do that! Have a Happy Valentine Week!

  52. I have more than I should (not addicted; I'll deny it ;p) I keep them stacked in a drawer in one of those 4-drawer rolling carts. My biggest complaint is to get to one of the folders I have to take everything out of the drawer. Big time waster. This is exactly what I've been looking for!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I just started collecting folders so I don't have a set storage system yet. I think I'm going to try a three ring binder with divided protectors or scrap rack flipping pages.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you so much for showing how you store your folders. I love the ring of tags idea if you don't mind sharing where did you get the ring that holds them all together?
Thanks for the chance to win I am already a follower ;)

  55. I made my on own storage years ago for my acrylic stamps. I had page protectors lying around so I ran them thru my sewing machine making sections. I then slit the tops of the sections on the bottom half of the page. So easy to do.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I store my cartridges in a three small tier Snapware containers, the top holds the carts and the two below holds the books. I have three containers alphabetical more or less. My embossing folders are in zippers binders. When I run out of room I'm definitely going to a container. I also put the embossing samples on a ring. Thanks for you many suggestions.
