Cuttlebug Folder Storage and GIVEAWAY!

I had been wondering what the best way to store my Cuttlebug folders was and so I asked on my facebook page and got the suggestion to make up tags that have each been embossed with a folder and then number both the tag and the folder.  That way it would be easy to really see how the different backgrounds will look on your cards and retrieval would be a cinch..  I wish I could find who suggested this because I think it's brilliant.

So, I got started by creating a file in the Cricut Craft Room using Plantin Schoolbook that cuts 12 tags on a 12" x 24" mat - they come out to be about 5" tall.  I just used plain white paper.  You could just do autofill if you want to use the cartridge alone.  Then, I numbered the tags.
Then, I numbered the folders.  I did these in groups of tens so I wouldn't mess up.
Then, I ran them through the Cuttlebug and stacked them upside down so they would stay in order.
Below is my Cuttlebug station.  (Please excuse the poor lighting - I meant to do this earlier but we had tornado warnings and sirens and black, black clouds so I couldn't do it.  We are just fine, though - relieved it's over!)  The Cuttlebug has the cozie on it and on the shelf above I have two large clearish boxes.  The pink one on the left is one of those "really useful boxes" from Staples.  It is the size that fits business sized envelopes.  On the right, I have all my dies.
Below is a close up of the Cuttlebug box.  I separate out all the Christmas folders so I don't have to keep going by them all year long.  The glue in the front is primarily a way to prop up the folders.
Below, I like to store my small dies in ziploc bags by manufacturer.  I also put those Tim Holtz Sizzix folders with their matching edges in a ziploc bag also.
Below is a side view of my messy die system.  It is easy to thumb through these, though.
I started out with my favorite Cuttlebug folders since those would be at the front of the box.  So, of course, Swiss Dots and Divine Swirl are the two first ones.  I didn't group them much beyond that, though there is a bunch that are all animal skin type folders that I put together.
So, here's the ring of tags and then a folder with it.
I labelled the top of the folder so I could quickly find things.
And here's the ring.  I haven't finished yet so there may be a second ring.  I love the Cuttlebug and their price point is so low (with a coupon, $3) that it's like a cheap thrill getting the folders.  The folders add so much to a project, though!
Now, for a giveaway:
FOUR people will each win one of these Cricut Cuttables!
This allows you to create your own custom Cuttlebug embossing folder.  It's very easy to do.

How can you win?
1) Leave a comment below telling me what your favorite Cuttlebug folder is and/or how you store them.
2) Subscribe or follow the blog.

Winner will be announced on Monday, April 9, 2012.  Winner has two weeks to claim prize. Allow four weeks for delivery.

Here are some of the questions I've gotten from yesterday's post about my craft room reorganization:

1) Where did you get your desk?  Ikea. I measured my space and then figured out what pieces I needed to buy to get the U shape configuration.  It took some thinking but I LOVE this desk!

2) Where did you get those pink and black containers that you put your paper in? I got those at Michaels. I don't think they have this pattern anymore but I do think they have other patterns.  I got the biggest sizes when they were on sale.

3) Did you do this in one day?  Ha ha - no!  It took like 2 weeks.

4) What are the dimensions of the cabinet that holds the ribbon, stamps, etc. that's on the wall?   31.5" tall x 25.5" wide x 3.75" deep.  I got mine at Michaels when they were 50% (they run this sale frequently). Click HERE to see the details. Their dimensions on the link seem different - you may want to go into the store to check.  I measured mine, though.

5) What happened to the bookmark feature in Cricut Craft Room?  I don't know - I will look into it.

  10. I can't decide if I like swiss dots or divine swirls better. I have less than 10 folders right now, so they're just sitting on my shelf. I'd love to get more, but I have to fit them in my "play money" budget that's currently being spent on paper.

  11. My favorite Cuttlebug Folder is D'Vine Swirls! I love the way you organize your folders. Right now I have them on a plastic box, because I only have a few of them, I recently purchased the Cuttlebug. I really love it!!

  12. Great idea to make cards with the embossing on them. My fav Cuttlebug embossing folder is Swiss Dots with D'vine Swirls being a close 2nd. I store my embossing folders in plastic Iris cases. Bought several of these plastic Iris cases during the day after Thanksgiving Day sale for $1 each.

  17. I always learn great things from your posts. I would love to have that many embossing folders! So cool. Right now I don't own any of the Cuttlebug folders (but I do own a Cuttlebug) but I really really want the Swiss Dots one. I have a few Sizzix folders but not many so storage isn't an issue.

  18. Absolutely love, love, love this idea. I keep mine thrown in two drawers and have to search every time I want one, not to mention can't remember which ones I have. I will put this to good use this week. Thanks

  19. Your way makes much more sense than mine! I try to just keep them in order alphabetically and it just seems so time consuming. I'd have to say my favorite cuttlebug folder is Swiss Dots.

  20. I so love the way you organized your folders. Such a wonderful idea. I will definitely keep this in mind when organizing my room. I have a ton I enjoy using but if I had to choose it would be the Birds and Swirls folder.

  21. My dies & embossing folders (all brands are currently (though not for much longer having seen your awesome idea)stashed in a couple of shoe boxes in no particular order, still in their packaging. I left them in the packaging so I see what the embossing looked like... but now I don't have to.
I store all my templates on a ring binder like this. Don't know why I didn't think of it for my embossing (and possibly die cut) samples. Sometimes we can't see the wood for the trees.
Thank you for the great idea... and the chance to win something as well - BONUS!!!

  34. I love getting new cuttlebug folders and always make a sample with a 3inch by 3 inch piece of paper. I swipe a bit of ink across it to make the design pop then glue it to a page in my inventory book. I organize my folders in alpha order by the name of the folder, and my fav folders are swiss dots and divine swirls, although the fluer di lis is a close third, oh and the Stars folder - love that too!

  42. My favorite folder is Swiss Dots. I also use the embossed tags, except instead of numbering I have a label with the name of the folder on it and a label with the name on the actual folder. I love having the tags, it saves so much time!

  49. Great idea and is very much like how I organized mine. I make the tags and embossed them all but instead of numbering the folders I put the name on the folder and the tags. I bought a taller plastic bin with the lid and have them all filed in it. Works great and its so easy to flip through them to see what I want to use. My go to folder is the swiss dots. TFS!

  70. This is a wonderful idea. I do need to organize mine better too and I like this idea. However, I did read an article (don't remember who or where) that if you use the markers on the folders, they will eventually bleed through and imprint onto the paper. I learned that after I had written the names on each of mine (in the lower right hand corner). So far I haven't had an issue with it. I just wanted you to be aware.

But back to the subject...I love it!

I bought a clear box for cards at Michaels and it fits so many things nicely and now have bought one for my peachy keen stamps that also fit nicely. It has the plastic dividers and is tall enough to put the largest of cards. Thanks Phyllis

  109. My favs are the same as yours, although I don't have nearly that many. I printed the names on clear labels and store them in an old hinged photo box. I do have samples but I like the tags on a ring idea. I saw that idea used for keeping track of colors of distress inks.

  121. I would have to say my favorite is the basic Swiss Dots - I use it a lot. As I don't have too many cuttlebug folders I just stand them up in a basket similar to yours. but I love your idea. I may get it started as I hope to add to my cuttlebug folder collection!

  123. I too love the Swiss Dots and Divine Swirl folders. I don't have as many as you do so for now they are rubber banded together. I love the tag idea and will be sure to make them before our next crop at church so others can easily see what folders I have.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I only have about 25 folders, so they're all in a small bin. My favorite is the Divine Swirls. I've used it for so many different applications - water, sky, sheep's wool, frosting, clouds, ice cream, etc., etc. I love my folders but wish more of them were 5" X 7". I have only one this size and it's a Christmas-themed pattern. Thanks for the great storage system idea!

    ReplyDelete
  125. My favorite folder is the swiss dots, also. It works for everything. I am using the Snap n Store containers often 50% off at JoAnn's to store embellishments and Cuttlebug folders. I use this system because they fit in the medical file cabinet I use for all my scrpbook storage, and I can keep adding more as my collection grows. (The medical file is the one where the doors open and slide in at the top - it's not very deep so works in my small craft room.)I love the "tags" idea for quick reference.

I need to punch holes in them and get a ring to hold them together because they're loose and I've dropped them and mixed them all up. Anyways thanks for the tip. My favorite is probably swiss dots because it's so versatile and divine swirls for something a little fancier. I keep mine in the box the cuttlebug came in. Not organized but I did write the name of each one on the outside of it with sharpie.

  153. I like Swiss Dots the best because it is SO versatile. I store mine in a container I got at JoAnn's, it doesn't hold all of them so the rest are in one of those rolling carts. Not the best system! I love your ideas and will have to implement them in my work space!

  162. Great job! Good for you to get so organized. Thanks for some great ideas. I store my Cuttlebug in cardstock folders cut with a Cricut file that Okielady designed. The folder is emoboassed on the front and stored by color-coded category - general, fancy, love, etc. I tried using a perm marker on the folder but the writing comes off after a few passes thru the machine. The folders are stored in 3 open video boxes. I have a card group that uses my folders so I ask gals to stand the cardstock holders upright when using the folder to be able to put them back more easily.

Then I used the embossing folder on the front page of the folder to show the design and placed the embossing folder inside the embossed folder and place them in he can, with the name on the folder tag. Works fine for me!
