Today's Must Make Mini-Album is "Home Sweet Home", all about my husband's childhood home.
I got this idea because I realized while making my USA album that I had hardly any interior photos of my childhood home. None of my bedroom at all. And now, my parents had moved away, the house had been remodelled, and while it looked great, it didn't look anything like when I grew up there.
How often have you taken any photos of the inside of your home? Most of us don't remember to and yet that's where we are raising children or living now and someday, we may not live there anymore and would like to look back on it. It's the funky couch or the odd painting or picture or whatnot that can bring back a slew of childhood memories for a grown up. Frankly, I wish I had photos of the inside of the house - just the way it was - funky avocado carpet and everything.
So, I decided to make the album for my husband. His parents have been in the same house for over 50 years (!!!) but I know, in the future, it won't remain the same and I want him to have these photos to remember everything about it. I also took photos of the hometown at the same time.
Tip#1: Take photos now of your house, on the inside. Don't worry about how clean it is - just do it!
Here are the photos:
Are my in-laws the last people in America who still have a dial phone? They are still using this thing. It's heavy as can be and the ring is astoundingly loud...I laugh everytime I have to use it.
I took all these photos of my husband's schools and even a section of road he used to park his car on (by this point in the project, he was involved and wanted this) so I shoved all the photos onto tags and into the pocket.
What do you think? Have you made an album like this? Do you want to?
Check back tomorrow for my final album - one I made at a Creating Keepsakes University with Stacy Julian..

I have very much enjoyed looking at your mini albums and the hints and tips on how to put them together. I have found it inspiring. It has encouraged me to give it a go.
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea. My Mom always took pictures of her house, especially at holiday times. She even made different curtains for the seasons. Coincidently she is from Lockport, NY. I think this mini will make a great gift for my sisters.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I've heard about some military families keeping a similar album to remember the places they've lived and their many moves.
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea, I only remember bits and pieces of my childhood home. My whole block was demolished to build the elementary school I went to.

I cannot wait for summer. I have a zillion pictures to scrapbook. I'll looking up this week of posts again soon. TFS
ReplyDeleteNice job! I love how you've highlighted these memories.
ReplyDeleteOMG - I really like the idea of putting the pictures on the tags. I travel quite a bit and usually end up with many more pictures than will fit on a page especially with a digital camera. What a great way to have a lot of pictures in a small space and to break up your layouts in a book.
ReplyDeletethis is a great series. what a lot of work. you must be happy to have this done.
ReplyDeleteAnother brilliant idea is all I can say. Love these mini albums! TFS

What a smart idea! I love the tag/photos in the pocket. If I do one of my house, I will give it the title of "The House that You Kids Wrecked" with the stained carpet, marked up walls, gross miss-matched old furniture that we got because the 3 boys totally trashed my beautiful and favorite sofa and love seat. I could go on and on . . .awillmon39@aol.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I should do that with my mom's house where we grew up. If I waited 'till my current house was clean before I took pictures the pictures would probably never get taken! lol
ReplyDeleteThis is a great album!
ReplyDeleteI just had to tell you that my mom still has a rotary phone. I felt bad 4 nines in it. Do you know how long it takes for the dial to come back around - lol!
That really is a great idea. I wish I had pictures of my childhood bedroom but don't think any exist1
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, Joy! My family and I sometimes reminisce about our childhood home and argue about the details!!! I will have to do this for my kids.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to find out more about your husband and about things that molded him into the man he is today! Wonderful he was interested enough to help out!

What a wonderful idea... my FIL would appreciate something like this as he's into family geneology and we always get a photo of the town/church his great-grandfather was a minister at, the house his parents owned and then moved just few houses down and then my husband and I bought the house and lived there for 7 years and the owners after us have now a huge new house and it goes on...so yes, a great way of keeping these memories. TFS :)
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat album for enjoyment later.

I love this idea. I live it the same house I grew up in, my children were raised here. It is so hard for me to even imagine what it looked like while i was a kid. I have trouble recalling the many changes over the last two decades. I think I will do this know, so I can at least recall what it looks like now...so 20 years from now I will remember!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of the home album.
ReplyDeleteI've lived around the US and in Europe so it will be fun to do an album of all the places. Thanks for the great idea.
Patti
It turned out awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove your Lockport, NY book especially since I lived in Lockport, NY and still live nearby! I was shocked to see this. Very cool. Can't wait to show my husband. Our boys went to Lockport High School too.
