The cause of this Blog Hop is very near and dear to all of us, and we all need to be aware that Autism is rapidly increasing in numbers in our children. 1 in every 100 children is diagnosed with Autism. It is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.
Know the Signs: Early Identification Can Change Lives
Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.
Today, on the 4th Annual World Autism Awareness Day, we are joining prominent buildings across North America and the world — including the Empire State Building in New York City and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada — who will turn their lights blue to raise awareness for autism and to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day.
Light it up Blue is aiming to light the world blue all throughout April — city by city, town by town — by taking action to raise autism awareness in our communities.
So help us, LIGHT it up BLUE this month!
Some of you know I have a little boy, Robbie, with high functioning autism. It has been a life changing, terrifying, exhilarating, overwhelming, exciting and yet healing experience. My husband has a blog chronicling our experiences with this; if you want to check it out, click HERE.

Card made using the Dude Lite Cricut Cartridge and stamp from CTMH.
I find the site Wrong Planet incredibly informative because it is made up of people who have high functioning autism/Asperger's Syndrome. This site gives me a vital perspective on things Robbie may be feeling and thinking. You may want to check it out.
Thank you so much to all of you for participating in this hop with me--I know we can make a difference! :)

Finally, the most helpful, concise bit of information on how to interact with someone with autism, who may be exhibiting some of the behaviors shown.

By the way, self stimulating behavior can be rocking, flapping hands, spinning objects, etc. It is a way that autistic people calm themselves.

I have a nephew who is autistic and he has a very special place in my heart. He is a great kid. He recently turned 18, and it hasn't gotten easier for my brother and sister-in-law, but they are amazing with him. They are all a huge blessing to our family.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and your family,
Brenda. :-)

ReplyDeleteI am lucky to say that our family has not been affected by Autism. That is we have no family members with autism. But there are several family members and friends who work with people affect with autism as well as other disabilities. I have made many projects for a silent auction for autism. I have been looking for the picutres of the albums. But one page can be seen on a blog I have started.

I ran across your blog and will be subscribing. It is great that so many people take the time to spread the word on health and awareness. I lost my son in febraury due to spina bifid a and sacral agenisis.. I never knew what neither of those were until after the fact.. Now I deal with regrets everyday..those what if's. so anytime i see someone spreading the word on anything.. I have to look and know it is just need to know information and so glad I was able to read up on your blog about autism. Thank you so much for blogging this.

Autism has been linked to the use of vaccinations. It is such a tough call as to open your child to the possibility of autism or diseases that may be fatal.
ReplyDeleteWow nice give away!!! Really could use one. Thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI truely believe that God gave special people special children in cases like this. I have a home day care and I use to watch a little girl with Down Sydrome and I believe I was truely blessed 4 or 5 years she was with me before starting school. I am still very good friends with her mother, who also feels blessed to have Emma as her child from God. And as for the blog give away, I would love to win. Thanks

ReplyDeleteSarah Autism Connects.
I have two daughters with autism. One with Asperger's and the other with PDD-NOS. My daughter with PDD is also considered 2E. She is profoundly gifted (studying microbiology at 8, doing algebra, studying 3 languages, and building things..solenoids, engines, etc.). I've worked very hard with her since she was 14 months old and is now a very happy functional child. She will always have autism, but I think her autism makes her into the unforgettable child that she is today.
