The cause of this Blog Hop is very near and dear to all of us, and we all need to be aware that Autism is rapidly increasing in numbers in our children. 1 in every 100 children is diagnosed with Autism. It is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.
Know the Signs: Early Identification Can Change Lives
Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.
Today, on the 4th Annual World Autism Awareness Day, we are joining prominent buildings across North America and the world — including the Empire State Building in New York City and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada — who will turn their lights blue to raise awareness for autism and to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day.
Light it up Blue is aiming to light the world blue all throughout April — city by city, town by town — by taking action to raise autism awareness in our communities.
So help us, LIGHT it up BLUE this month!
Some of you know I have a little boy, Robbie, with high functioning autism. It has been a life changing, terrifying, exhilarating, overwhelming, exciting and yet healing experience. My husband has a blog chronicling our experiences with this; if you want to check it out, click HERE.

ReplyDeleteThis is a cause that is near & dear to my heart!!! I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Lovaas at UCLA-I took courses and worked as a trained "autistic therapist". It was the most rewarding experience ever (even if it could be emotionally draining at times)! So many of "my kids" were mainstreamed after therapy and their own teachers could not tell who the autistic one was!
Thank you for sharing such wonderful (& informative) sites! Early intervention is KEY!!!!

ReplyDeleteJoy,
ReplyDeleteI have been following you for quit a while now, and this is the first I heard of your son. I am sure that it must have been devastating for you when he was first diagnosed with autism. I just can't imagine. But after reading some of your husbands blog and knowing how sweet your personality is, I know that you are both doing a wonderful job of raising both of your kids. Having never dealt with any child with autism, I am curious and plan to do some research. I have 17 month twin granddaughters that I have been so blessed with and really need to know signs to watch for. It is my understanding that they can be several years old before you actually know of this condition. Thanks for bringing awareness to us all. Great cause. I will be looking for the blue lights.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing. My non-verbal son is 3 1/2 and has a educational diagnosis of autism. We are in the process of getting his medical dx of autism. Monday will be his final appt. to complete the ADOS. We've already been told by the medical Dr. that he for sure is autistic, but for insurance purposes and tx. we need to do the ADOS (the Dr. had to reschedule on us due to her child being sick). Currently he receives ESCE through the public school, and OT once a week. My husband and I will be relieved to finally have the dx so get the services our son so desperately needs. I'm happy that you were able to share your story too! What a long journey it has been and I'm happy there is so much support available. I can't imagine going through this without it! I just took my son to see the movie Hop at the AMC sensory friendly film, what a great experience that was this morning! For more about these films in your area check out Autism Society of America's website!

ReplyDeleteWonderful card! I am a retired first grade teacher. I can relate. This is a wonderful cause. I am so happy that more people are learning about this and understanding how little we know about how our brains work and how much we need to learn and are learning from these amazing children.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the links. My daughter is helping her boyfriend raise his son who is high functioning autistic . They face many challenges daily since he is a teenager with normal teenage "things" mixed with his other issues. I have forwarded the links to her since there might be something there to help. Thanks again......Praying that your son does well as he growns up. He sure is cute ! Oh, and thanks for the chance to win the ATG.
ReplyDeleteRobbie is adorble! Thanks for sharing his picture. Your post is a great tribute.
ReplyDeleteAs a school principal, I want to applaude you as a parent for sharing your child's life with us. I read and read and read and yet I know I'll never truly understand what you go through, both trial and tribulations, because I do not have a biological child with autism. I do, however, have my children at school and they are such a blessing. Kudos to you and your family! sonyagilley@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYou have a very handsome young man there. You can tell he is the light in your life. God bless you and yours!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joy, for providing this information. I am learning a great deal about autism from this blog hop.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew has autism and it was not diagnosed until 5th grade. It was a rollercoaster ride for so many years. He is doing "ok" right now, but this is a condition even myself as an RN couldn't see. I am so grateful for the support we have received
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful hop! Love your project. TFS

Thank you for bringing a very serious concern to the forefront. I had heard the statistic the other day of 1 in 100 children - that is just way too many. Thank you also for the chance to win an ATG gun. I have been wanting one for the longest time - I don't live near a Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, Archivers or any other type of scrapbook store :( So hopefully my luck stars will align.
ReplyDeleteJudging by the number of people who commented... you have definately done a great job of getting the awareness out!! Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteRobbie is such a beautiful blessing. And so is his mama for sharing him with us and for sharing her talents and most of all her time. We love you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great give away! Nice way to remind everyone to keep Autism in the fore front! Beth
