I got a great question from Donna who wanted to know what each of these different things do and what the differences between the items were and why you need this but maybe not that, etc. Great things to talk about!
Gypsy:
Let's cover the Gypsy first, since it's the newest! Currently, at this time, the Gypsy has almost all the features of Design Studio software and one important addition (grouping). The Gypsy can:
* weld
* copy and paste (on the one mat open)
* grouping function
* search for keywords - better than Design Studio
* hold all your cartridges inside the Gypsy
* can eliminate the need for the Jukebox (JB) since it holds all the cartridges within it, once you've loaded yours onto it.
* has almost all the cartridges available for preview, with the exception of Designers Calendar
* open a file as a template
* can work with Mac computers with OSX version 10.5 and above
* portable and does not require the Cricut machine to be hooked to the computer
Design Studio Software:
The Design Studio software is loaded onto your computer (not Mac compatible). The Design Studio can:
* weld
* copy and paste between mats and files - Gypsy cannot copy and paste between files, but Design Studio can. You can get around this on the Gypsy somewhat by using the "open as template" function to make additional mats.
* Allows you to have multiple mats within a file so that when designing a word book, you can preview and see all the pages at once, thus making lining up the pages easier.
* search for keywords (not as good as the Gypsy, though)
* uses a larger screen (i.e. your computer screen, which is way bigger than the 3"x4" screen on the Gypsy)
* shows you all the cartridges (except Designers Calendar)
* lets you use the "Hide Selected Contour" button which is handy in getting rid of cuts you might not want, such a score cuts on the cards in Wild Card cartridge. Currently, Gypsy does not allow this.
* works best with the Jukebox (JB) when using more than one cartridge in a design as you don't have to manually switch out cartridges if JB is plugged in.
* Currently, cuts faster than the Gypsy, when cutting an intricate design.
* Does NOT have a grouping function (like the Gypsy does) which can be frustrating when designing an intricate cut
* requires the computer to be hooked to the Cricut machine
Jukebox:
The Jukebox is a device that allows you to plug in six cartridges and then hook all of those up, using one cord, to the Cricut machine itself. That means that you could then access all six of those cartridges at one time. You can also hook Jukeboxes together. You can hook up to three Jukeboxes together and then have access to 18 cartridges at once. You can then either use the Jukebox in combination with the Design Studio software or on its own and just change out the overlays on the machine to find all the designs you need.
Gypsy/Design Studio Interaction:
Today, the software that runs the Gypsy is different than the Design Studio software. It is planned that the Gypsy will be able to import/export files to and from the Design Studio. Stay tuned for Gypsy updates and more information on how to do that. Currently, this is unavailable but in the near future, should be up and running.
So, the questions that arise are:
1) Do I need the Jukebox anymore if I have the Gypsy? Well, if you plan on using the Gypsy exclusively, probably not. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, though! If you still want to use Design Studio, you may want to hold onto the Jukebox as it is convenient not to have to keep unloading/loading your cartridges. Or if you still plan on cutting using your cartridges, the JB is really handy.
2) Do I need all of these things - Jukebox, Design Studio and the Gypsy? Well, it depends on what you are doing. Right now, there are things that the Gypsy does that Design Studio doesn't and vice versa. However, that may not be the case in the future. How long until the Gypsy has some of the Design Studio features that people want ("Hide selected contour", etc.) is unknown to me at this time. How long until Design Studio has a "group all" function is another question. It may be a case of wait and see. Also, if you are someone who always loves to get new technology the minute it is released, then you may want the Gypsy no matter what. It really depends on what you need and want and what kind of consumer you are.
I hope this helps! If you have more questions, please put them in the comment section! Also, remember that this info is good as of today and they could update the Gypsy tomorrow with new functions, and then some of this might not apply. Since the Gypsy is so new, it's getting frequent updates so stay tuned. I will try and edit this as needed as time passes to keep it as current as possible!

Is the Gypsy and CDS compatible with Windows 7?
Thanks
CJ
Great article. I only have the gypsy but it's nice to know what the others do to.
Windows 7 will be released October 22. I will try and find out if it will be compatible and/or how long until its compatible.
Thank you HappyHappyJoyJoy, I appreciate that. You have been so very helpful to us Cricut owners.

Thanks for the post! I can't wait to get my hands on my Mom's Gypsy...she is kind enough to let me mooch off of her!
Thanks Joy - I posted about this on my blog and put a link for my CJT friends to come over here and read your wonderful summary. Thanks for taking the time to educate us.
Hugs,
Tracy
I just wanted to tell you what a big help this was for me in making my decision whether or not to purchae the Gypsy.
Thank you so very much!
Thank you for clarifying the differences between DS & the Gypsy. I have both but hope that with future updates I will only need the Gypsy. I do have a question though. I cannot find the cut & paste function on the Gypsy, could you please let me know how to find it?
Don't forget that DS will not work with Mac computers. So for us Mac owners the Gypsy is the rather expensive solution.
TFS! I can't wait to get my Gypsy when it ships in November! I love all the information you give us!
Actually the back-end program to the Gypsy IS Design Studio. I had a LONG talk with the Cricut Rep at CKC as I was concerned they would stop supporting DS. He said if they did that, then they would have to stop selling the Gypsy as it is DS is the backend for Gypsy (his exact words).
What is the difference between weld and group? At CKC, the rep grouped everything together using the weld feature and cut a huge design and it was all connected together.
Weld connects items together and they MUST be touching. Grouping keeps items together BUT they don't need to be touching. For example, if you made a word (not connected) and put hearts in front and behind it, you could group those items and then move them around the mat and/or copy and paste them. They wouldn't be touching one another but they would all move together. If you use the weld function, they are actually all touching and connected so when it cuts, it is now ONE piece. HTH!!
Is there a video on how the Gypsy works? I guess I don't understand why I would need/want one. Thanks! --Carolyn
Great information on the difference between the JB, DS, and the Gypsy. I have all three and have stopped using my DS and JB. I recently took my Gypsy to a weekend crop and was able to do everything I wanted to without having all the extra supplies to lug around. I also took the Gypsy on a scrapbooking cruise and again it saved me so much space in my luggage.
Joy, couple of questions for you...
for the gypsy, wanted to know how to copy & paste an image I just created.
and how do I scroll thru only my cartridges that I have installed on my gypsy w/out having to go thru the 100 cartriges list.
Pls help!
Thanks!

Is there a way to upload a business logo file and cut it using the cricut? If so, how do you do that?
Thanks in advance!
This article is a great one and something I have been wondering about. I have the Cricut Create and a Gypsy and have heard about DS but didn't know if I really needed it. Thanks for clarifying each product.
I made a file in DS using Gypsy font...which I obviously have to cut using the Gypsy. How do I get that file onto my Gypsy??
This was great info. I was wondering all those things. I recently purchased the gypsy and was a little confused in the beginning, but I know LOVE the gypsy and I don't really need my design studio, and its portable.So I can take it anyware, and works with all cricut machines.I also have the personal, expression, and the imagine. LOVE them all they all have their own capabilities that the other ones do not.
For the anonymous who wanted to know how to look through cartidges on gypsy without going through the whole list. You can filter to just the cartridges you have linked. Go to the screen where you designing image and touch keypad in lower right hand corner, your list appears at top where it says show touch arrow and filter to linked cartridges. Now you can only see the cartridges you actually have.
Also, you can go to the gypsy website and download the gypsy user manual. If you were like me, it didn't come with one and never used one before. I was clueless!
I just got a gypsy and am having a hard time with it being so small. Can you use design studio and qypsy together? Also, I do not have all the cartridges that are on my gypsy.
I want the Gypsy mostly just because I want the cartridges that come preloaded with it. Luckily it has gone down in price. I guess it has to since it isn't compatible with Windows 7.
Great article !
I have CDS and just got a Gypsy, so I've tried it for hours and hours and so far I love it ! But I love CDS as well... Only the Gypsy being portable is really wonderful !
Nevertheless, i'd like to have both linked to my PC/Cricut, to be able to switch from one to the other, or to avoid moving my Cricut all the time to plug the Gypsy or my PC on it back, so is it possible to have both G AND CDS connected ? How ? Thanks.
