Printing Digital Photos

Monday, April 27, 2009

I highly advocate printing your digital photos out regularly - monthly or at worst quarterly. If you take a lot of pictures, waiting longer than that to print becomes too daunting. Look for sales and sign up for email photo promos at your favorite printing places so you know when a good sale is coming. I think printing out your photos is important because digital media keeps changing and what's working today for digital storage WON'T be what people are using in 5 years, guaranteed. Are you going to keep transferring all those photos to additional media storage? Also, you are one virus or hard drive crash away from losing the photos. If you printed them out, at least you still have the photo!

That being the case, the Scrap Your Trip website did a blind study of over 25 photo developing labs using the same photos are scored them in different categories. The top three photo developers in terms of how the photo looks when developed are:

1) Costco

2) Walgreens

3) Creative Memories

Head over HERE to see the full results! It's very interesting!

Maybe I already told you this? But I am horrible about printing out my pictures. It's sad since I have albums that I keep the pictures in. Last November while my family was in AL I went through and had pictures printed. Over a year's worth. Nearly 700 pictures. SEVEN HUNDRED. And then? I had to sort them chronologically. And then I had to stick them in photo albums.

It's a cautionary tale. I wish I had learned my lesson. But here it is nearly May and I haven't printed pictures since then.

I think it's good to print out your pictures as you go too. This is something that I'm not always good about, but I've made a resolution (Sunday - after a crop that I didn't have all the pictures I wanted). One of the things that I think printing pictures does is it keeps you aware of were you are with your scrapbooking. It is easy to forget if everything is stuck in the computer.

great advice - and it's funny but I've printed photos at lots of stores and I totally agree with ScrapYourTrip - Costco and Walgreen's surprisingly enough do produce great prints.

Thanks for the note on my blog. I appreciated your very "thorough opinion" and I think I will definitely be checking out the Great American Scrapbooking convention.

By the way, I forgot to say that as a Creative Memories Consultant; I was very happy to see where they placed. I've never printed at either Cosco (not a member) or Walgreens. I've used some of the others though. I think the worst I've used is Walmart. I actually ordered multiple copies of the same picture - some were good, others very dark. So I do not think they are consistent.
